At present since 1st April 2022, the EV chargepoint grant amounts to up to 75% of the cost of purchasing and installing a charge point in your home, up to a maximum of £350.
This grant is only available to homeowners who live in flats and people in rental accomodation.
Once the home charger has been installed, the only costs associated with charging your electric vehicle are those incurred by your electricity provider – with every car and model requiring different timescales to receive a full charge, amounting to varying definitive charge costs. On average, however, we have found that the cost of driving an electric car sits at between 2-5p per mile – providing huge savings in the long run when compared with the cost of petrol or diesel fuel.
In terms of the speed for charging, this is where home charging points come into their own and provide real value for money. While charging your vehicle at public charge points or at work is entirely possible and may even be free in some places, and you can even use a simple 3-pin plug point inside your home, being able to charge your car from the comfort of your own dedicated home charger provides an ease and comfort – as well as the optimum distance of travel per charge.
To put that into perspective, let’s compare the mileage which can be gained from a 3-pin plug point, to that gained from an electric vehicle home charger.
A home charge point will result in coverage of between 15 and 30 miles per hour, depending on the speed of travel and the exact model of vehicle. In comparison, charge earned through a standard plug point in your home will provide around 8 miles per hour of ground coverage. The difference is stark and becomes particularly crucial when you start to plan a longer journey – determining how many times you may have to stop and charge your vehicle – potentially leading to further expense.
And while the government have done all they can to support the outgoing costs of installing home chargers for every day used, the cost is not the only benefit to installing a charger at home. Completely weather-proof and purpose built for long-term user, EV charging systems are designed to withstand a life outside, ensuring the safest possible electrical charging without being affected by the environment around them. All in all, it may seem like a large investment at first, but over time you will find that your home charge point is more than worth the cost is takes to install it.
